Last weekend

This was an extremely busy weekend!

I started the weekend working out with Kristina at Gold's gym Friday night. First, I did two miles on the elliptical in 20minutes...which is an improvement from the first day at the gym when it took me 15minutes to do one mile (ya, I was really out of shape). Then we worked on different arm muscle groups. Last time we went to Gold's, we worked on leg muscles and next time we'll work on abs and back muscles.

Saturday began like every Saturday with a call from Mama. She and Dad are doing pretty well. She was really excited that Keon was going to be having dinner with them during the week and that he was going to help out with trimming the bushes. After our conversation I quickly got ready and went to the lab. FSU was holding an Open House for undergraduates who were interested in doing research as DIS (directed individual studies) students. I'm not sure how many students they were expecting but only 25 showed up. We had several stations set up including GFP (green fluorescent protein) embryos, larvae, and flies. They're really cool!! They glow green!! I performed about 10 different dissections. My research at FSU is focused on studying how anterior-posterior axis specification is determined by genetic interactions and mRNA localization in early Drosophila melanogaster oogenesis.

After about five hours of lab work, I ran home to get ready for a night with the grads. A bunch of us went to barnacle bill's for oysters and then a fellow grad student's concert. Barnacle Bill's was so delicious! We split three buckets of steamed oysters with horseradish and butter and hot sauce...mmmmmm. A couple of us shared a dozen raw oysters too...oooooh they were soooo good. Afterwards we went to Shawn's concert at Big Daddy's. Shawn plays bass in a black metal band. I'm not a huge fan of black metal, but with ear plugs it wasn't half bad. And if the oysters and rock music weren't enough, we decided to head back to debbie's to have pizza and play guitar hero. PS- guitar hero ROCKS! I loved it!! I never played it before and I fell in love with it that night. I'm totally getting it...or rock band...when I bulid up so more "me" money.

Sunday is always pretty busy since I go to bible study in the morning, church service to follow, the gym with Kristina, and a financial class in the evening. But this Sunday was even crazier since I had everyone over for the Fox premiere night after my financial class. We watched the season premieres for the Simpsons, King of the Hill, Family Guy, and American Dad. It was a blast. I love entertaining :)

And just as quickly as the weekend started...it ended. Since Allen left, I find myself busier than ever! And it's almost become compulsive. I don't want to spend too much time by myself for fear that I will start to think about him. Thinking about him is okay I guess...dwelling and worrying is not. Trying to find a good balance is harder than it sounds. This weekend I didn't get to speak with him or chat with him at all. I only received a few 3 sentence e-mails!! And I know if I hadn't planned such a busy weekend I would have been driving myself up the wall. You see, he's been sick! And he had to work a completely different shift than he's used to working. This is the first time in a long time that I haven't been there for him while he has been sick. And I feel helpless. I can't talk with him or make him soup or comfort him. In fact, the only thing that I have done that seems to help is that I packed a back scratcher in his military duffle bag before he left. Scratch a man's back and he'll love you in the moment...give him a back scratcher and he'll love you forever.

I soo identify with the balance thing when your husband is out of town. It's a good thing you're such a committed, determined person...I hardly go to bed when Chad isn't here. I can't imagine a "long-term" stint of playing life without my better half. Thanks for sharing about what it's like :)
